(December 10, 2009) — There has always been an air of fascination surrounding celebrities. Maybe it’s the way they smile, the characters they play or simply the fact that we hear about them so much from a distance that seeing them in person seems more like fantasy than reality. Whatever the reason, many people continue to be drawn to celebrities, picking their favorites and getting to know them, even if it’s just from a distance. J unior Lynette Hacopian is one such fan. Since she started watching the ABC series The Nanny two years ago, Hacopian has become a big fan of Fran Drescher, the actress who plays Fran Fine, the main character in the series. “I loved her from the start,” Hacopian said. Hacopian describes Fine as a “bubbly, humorous and sexy nanny” with a New York accent. Hacopian soon became addicted to the show, often watching it during sleepovers until late at night. Hacopian loved Fine’s character so much that she even began mimicking the way she talked. “It’s funny—sometimes I’m talking with people, and I’ll start talking like her, in a New York accent,” she said. Hacopian has also picked up several aspects of Fran Fine’s character that she has applied to her own life. “Watching the show makes me think of witty comebacks and a new way to approach a situation, with humor,” she said. Hacopian does not only love the way she talks, but also admires Fran Fine’s personality. “I look up to her boldness,” Hacopian said. “She is proud of who she is; she always has a reason to hold her head high in the worst situations.” Though Hacopian has never met her favorite actress, she expects her to be “funny, energetic and genuine.” She also expects Drescher to be like the character she plays, since the show was created by her. Senior Rosie Geozalian, however, sees celebrities in a different light. Geozalian calls herself a fan of many different celebrities, but not in the same way. “I admire them not as people, but as entertainers,” she said. Geozalian does not expect actors or actresses to behave like their roles in real life. “They get paid to act like somebody else. Look, talk, walk and laugh like their character,” she said. “I’m pretty sure Johnny Depp doesn’t steal gold, have scissors for hands or operate a chocolate factory on his free time,” she said. Geozalian said that it’s normal to love celebrities without knowing them, but that people have to realize that celebrities are just like the rest of us. “They drink Pepsi like everybody else, and they laugh and cry like everybody else,” she said.
