(December 10, 2009) — Holiday music played in the background as students and teachers stacked their cans, competing against other classes in the annual Canned Food Drive on Dec. 4. “Ok guys, two minutes!” senior Francesca Valencia announced. Students struggled to keep the cans stacked upright, since they kept collapsing from instability. After all cans were neatly stacked, the competitors were judged by the height of their can towers. Then, the winner was announced: Spanish teacher Julie Ann Melville’s fourth period class. “When we had a stable formation, I knew we had it,” senior Renita Malekian said. Before the day of the contest, Melville sent out emails to all her fourth period students, reminding them to bring in cans the following day. “I never lose,” Melville said after the competition. For their reward, Melville’s fourth period class will be enjoying doughnuts. All food will be going to Path Achieve, a homeless shelter in Glendale.
