(October 22, 2002) — Clark Magnet High School experienced a third act of vandalism in one year, when the three drink dispensing machines at the top of the amphitheatre were damaged during the first weekend in October. Clark officials reported the case to the Glendale Police Department. When the machines were vandalized in the past, the police department had officers on patrol and caught the perpetrators. Assistant Principal Joan Shoff said that the police department might patrol Clark again. Such cases of vandalism have occurred in other schools as well, and according to Shoff, many schools have been vandalized more than Clark. Shoff added that due to the continuous acts of vandalism, the vending machines might be pulled out of Clark. However, that decision is one that Coca-cola must make if the expense of maintaining the machines becomes too great. The Coke machines provide a source of income for the school, and with the money from them stolen, Clark’s income has declined. It is not known how much money the school has lost, Shoff said. Vandalism first affected Clark in 2002 during the weekend of May 4 with the destruction of the three vending machines near the girls’ locker room. A second act of vandalism took place on the weekend of May 13 when the two vending machines by the girls’ locker room and one machine by room 4201 were wrecked. Three people were caught in the act of vandalizing the vending machines June 19. According to the Glendale Police Department, one of the people pled guilty and the other two have upcoming court dates. The perpetrators were caught because the Glendale Police Department was notified that some people were breaking into vending machines throughout La Crescenta and began surveillance.
