(October 22, 2002) — Even in a crowd, Junior Hannah Lee can be spotted a mile away. Through her expressive art style, Lee has made an impact on the minds of teachers and students alike. Lee has been interested in art all of her life, but it was not until her sophomore year that she discovered her artistic ability. In last year’s Spotlight Award for prestigious young artists, she placed as a semifinalist alongside her peer influence junior Peter Sriployrung, who took first place. Ever since then, her art has been displayed in the Glendale Unified School District building and throughout the classrooms and halls of Clark. Most Clark students, however, would also consider Lee a literal walking canvas as she always carries art on her. Junior Sarah Kwon comments, “She designs her own clothes and jewelry.” Lee also carries a sketchbook around with her as a result of her spontaneous artistic subjects. Her subjects, a combination of realism and surrealism, Lee says, “are anything that bothers me or expressive of my voice.” Through an artistically expressed voice, she hopes to convey a psychological message. Inspired by surreal artists like Salvador Dali, Lee says that she loves “mind-tripping” art. There is not a certain time that she actually sits down and forces herself to compile a sketch. She uses art as an expression of her emotions. “The best time for me to do art,” Lee says, “is any time, because my emotions are changing all the time.” Lee’s art has received positive remarks. Junior Jasmine Bonilla comments, “Hannah Lee’s art is very deep in nature and imaginative. It is spontaneous and reflects the person that she is.” Art teacher Judith Craemer says that “she is very creative, fresh, and insightful.” According to Craemer, Lee has a definite and bright future in art. Art will always be a part of her life as “it has,” says Lee, “helped me to express myself and be open to the world.”
