(December 20, 2002) — After two boat trips of retrieving sediment samples, the EAST team made yet another trip on November 21. But things were done slightly different this time. They had a scanning sonar device that the San Bernardino Sheriff’s department lent them. Besides another trip, EAST has also received news that the samples sent to EMAX labs are nearly complete, and results should be in by winter break. EAST is also interested in using the labs at Cal State LA to test tissues of fish for heavy metals, pesticides, and other organic pollutants such as DDT. These tests are used to determine if the fish in the San Pedro and LA Harbor area are good to eat. “If they’re good to eat, then I have halibut in my freezer that we can eat. We’re going to have a fish fry,” said EAST teacher Dominique Evans-Bye. They’ve also got a website started at geocities.com/cmhseast. They plan to have a Yahoo flipbook of photos up and running soon.
