(January 27, 2003) — Six Clark students have been chosen for the semifinals for the Music Center’s 15th annual Spotlight Awards. The semifinalists are sophomores Frances Cho, Shenna Chun and MiMi Kang, junior Hannah Lee, and seniors Lily Hambartsoomian and Lili Melikian. All Spotlight entries relate to the theme of music. The Spotlight Awards is an art competition designed to recognize Southern California’s best high school artists. There were a total of 164 visual art entries from all over Southern California, 35 of which were chosen for the semifinals. Art teacher Judith Craemer said that she is satisfied with the number of entries that were admitted this year because this number is consistent to that of last year. All six entries from Clark are paintings, except for Lili Melikian’s photography entry. These six students, along with all the other semifinalists, were invited to attend master classes taught by top artists at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. They are also required to attend tours at different museums. After the semifinals, six students will be chosen to compete for a cash scholarship. The winner will receive $1500, the runner up $1000, and five honorable mentions $250 each. In addition, winners will have their art displayed in several local art galleries. Junior Peter Sriployrung, last year’s top finalist in the Spotlight Awards, was the first Clark student to have ever won this art competition.
