(January 27, 2003) — Clark’s student store, the Panther Pit, has been undergoing major changes this month. Following the enactment of Senate Bill 19, which requires the eventual banning of sodas and junk food on school campuses, the student store is beginning to eliminate many of its unhealthy food options. According to Agnus Lally, director of the GUSD’s Food Services, although the law has passed, it is not being implemented unless the schools have funding available for healthier options beginning in 2004. “The student store is becoming more like a lunch cart,” said ASB advisor Kristina Provost. Students will no longer be able to purchase many of their favorites during lunch and snack. Certain cookies, candy bars, chips, candies and smoothies will all be taken off the racks. They will be replaced with healthier foods from the food lines, like Naked Juice and sandwiches. Sodas, however, will continue to be served for the time being. Provost clarified that until now, the profit from the student store was an arbitrary amount, depending on how many items were sold. Profits used to go to the ASB fund, but will now alternate between the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes beginning in February. “It would have been so much better if they had replaced the junk food with new healthier things instead of things we can just buy downstairs,” said senior Nane Zadouri. “Students would like the changes if we had more variety. Taking out chips and candy limits our options even more,” Zadouri said.
