(February 28, 2003) — Eleven Clark athletes are currently on the Crescenta Valley’s track and field team. Head coach Mark Evans said that the contributions from these and other Clark athletes of recent years have always been significant for the team’s status. Evans said, “The most significant contribution that Clark students have made is in various long distance events.” These events include the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter dashes. Long distance runner junior Eugene Choi comments, “the most rigorous trainings are long distance routines.” Male athletes participating in these events are expected to run approximately 45-50 miles per week and female athletes are expected to run 25-30 miles per week. For the boys’ team, senior Jeff Shaw, long distance runner since his freshman year, has been part of CV’s team the longest. Evans says, “Jeff Shaw is dedicated and has made a big impact on the team. His love for the game can be seen in the consistency of his great performances.” Shaw’s personal record in the three- mile run is 16:25. The current school record to beat is 15:26. Evans said that since the season has just begun, there have not been enough practices to determine where the new Clark athletes, both female and male, stand. He also encourages more Clark girls to try out for the team because sophomores Stephanie Bernabel and Melissa Dacher are the only girls on the team right now. With participation from these Clark students, the team is aspiring to place first from its current rank of second place out of 16 schools in their league. Evans said that he is pleased with the number of Clark students that are on the team this year. “By being part of the team, students are also part of a community. Participation is always the initial stage to making contributions,” he said. Clark students on the team are freshmen Daniel Drogan and Patrick Atwater; sophomores Stephanie Bemabel, Andres Stickar, and Melissa Dacher; juniors James Ahn, Chad Mosely, James Constanzo, and Eugene Choi; and seniors Jeff Shaw and Joshua Ahn. For these students, the number one opponent is Arcadia. But according to last year’s league records, the teams to beat are John Muir for girls and Pasadena for boys. However, when in competition with Glendale and Hoover, CV has consistently placed first.
