(April 4, 2003) — It’s Monday March 17 in the Glendale High School Auditorium and four of Clark’s representatives: Christopher Kang, Jeffrey Shaw, Rebecca Stuart, and Allen Wilcox, wait under a series of bright stage lights for the next question to be called. At half time, Clark is in first place with a score of 57 points. The Scholastic Bowl is an annual academic competition and players must be familiar in math, science, history, language arts, and fine arts subjects. It’s a fast-paced competition and players need to respond quickly. “You’re put on the spot light and it takes a special skill to answer a question only after a few words” commented Vice Principal Joan Shoff who was present at the game. Players have been training for the game since late September. Out of Clark’s 12 members, only 5 were chosen to represent Clark, 1 as an alternate. In addition to the many Glendale Unified District staff members and players, channel 4 weatherman, Fritz Coleman was present at the games as a quizmaster, and has been for the past five years. The game is in particular a very competitive game, however players and their schools showed sportsmanship. Crescenta Valley High School players pointed out a mistake made by the judges and gave Glendale High School two points. At the end of the games, Hoover High School Co-Principal Hasmik Danielian and Shoff exchanged words of encouragement and a hug, as Danielian said “Clark did very well.” The final score was: Hoover 74, CV 91, GHS 52 and Clark 66. CV took home two trophies with them: the quiz trophy and the overall trophy, and GHS took the essay contest trophy this year. Clark took third place.
