(May 5, 2003) — What ever happened to football games that everyone attended or letterman jackets as a symbol of pride? Nowadays everyone seems to hold a blasé attitude towards everything. In the 1950’s there was a Beach Boys song called “Be True to You School,” while today school spirit is less than popular. We’ve come a long way since the fifties and perhaps so should our prom. It’s time for the elimination of old, tired traditions at Clark and for the establishment of improved and time-appropriate ones, traditions that specifically honor the diversity and casual attitude of an era. Prom at Clark has so far been a night dominated by the female agenda: roses, dresses, tiaras and slow dances—things the average guy hates. In an age of equality it shouldn’t be this way. There should at least be a male aspect to the prom court. After all, not only girls look good dressed up. There should be a couple of prom princes and a king for equality and entertainment’s sake. Secondly, in the spirit of the modern day, why do the prom princesses have to have a minimum 3.0 GPA? This is discriminating against candidates who don’t have the grades but have the heart. Grades shouldn’t be criteria for eligibility. If this policy is kept the school is not honoring diversity and tolerance. It’s logical that a scholarship recipient should have the grades, but smiling and looking pretty doesn’t require academic merit. Old-fashioned thoughts say that a member of prom court should be a role model, a decent student and perhaps even a member of ASB. We live in an era that embraces diversity, challenges convention and reinvent it. Our prom should be able to reflect those values and not the values of a society fifty years past.
