(June 3, 2003) — Back for another ‘Music Under the Stars,’ despite the lack of actual stars, the Glendale District Symphony Orchestra entertained members of the community in an hour and a half-long concert that began at 6:30 p.m. last Tuesday here at Clark. The orchestra opened with Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” in honor of those who have served for the U.S., according to orchestra conductor Craig Kupka. Chamber orchestra, a selected group of Hoover and Clark musicians, followed the opening with a variety of classical pieces which included Mozart’s “Symphony No. 31” and Faure’s “Fantasie for Flute and Orchestra” featuring sophomore flute soloist Ann Jun. Wrapping up with Vivaldi’s “Concerto in Sol Minore for Two Cellos and String,” the Chamber orchestra left the stage and the Monday Night Orchestra picked up the beat with a jazz bit, “Take 5” by Brubeck, featuring yet another sophomore flute soloist Tigran Arakelyan. Other pieces included a portion from the score of “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” as well as another Faure piece “Pavane.” Monday Night Orchestra was then joined by the Chamber orchestra to conclude the concert with Franz von Suppé’s “Poet and Peasant Overture,” a light-hearted, love-making ritual between tempos. “It was a beautiful concert,” commented Assistant Principal Joan Shoff. “Just beautiful.”
