(June 3, 2003) — On Wednesday, April 16, about 85 students participated in the second annual Bridge Building contest at Clark. Although bridge building has been going on at Clark for many years, this has been the second year in a row that they have participated in the international competition in Chicago. Out of the 85 bridges that were tested at Clark, the top two belonged to sophomore Eric Delgado and junior Surge Kasparian. Their bridges held the most amount of weight and were the most durable. Delgado’s bridge held 26.5 kg of weight and Kasparian’s held 15 kg. The students were given one week to come up with a model for the bridge and about two weeks to design it after the materials came in. “I’m glad that I got the chance to be in the contest and that my bridge won first place!” said Delgado, of his bridge entered for Clark. “It was a fun experience.” But the fun didn’t end there. The finalists, including Kasparian traveled to Chicago to compete against about 60 other students from around the country for the International Bridge Building contest, held on Saturday, April 26. While Kasparian went to Chicago and competed, Delgado was unable to attend and instead mailed his bridge to Chicago. Though neither of them won first place in the state finals, they both agreed that it was an enjoyable experience and that they learned a lot from it. For the International Bridge Building Contest, first place went to John Grimsley from Curlew High School (in WA), whose bridge held 9.56 g (50 kg) of weight.
