(June 17, 2003) — Alina Aghazarian—Has she had enough? After four years of water polo at Hoover squeezed into her hectic schedule, Aghazarian is used to the pressure and stress. Arriving home by 5:30 pm after practice and by 8 pm after games, performing her schedule has become Aghazarian’s second nature. The sport doesn’t only help Aghazarian physically, but mentally as well; her ability to exceed in both water polo and school has improved throughout the years. One of Aghazarian’s most memorable moments in water polo was during her sophomore year when she was on the JV team. The team was warming up for the upcoming game when they found a piece of glass, Aghazarian tried to reach it with her foot but ended up bleeding. “My coach told me ‘Alina, I don’t want to say this to make you feel bad, but if you don’t play we might lose the game,’” recalled Aghazarian, “just by hearing him say that, I didn’t give up and played with a wrapped-up foot.” So is the pressure off now? After damaging her knees from the last couple of years of swimming, Aghazarian only seems to try harder. Aghazarian has a great desire to continue playing in college but she expects an operation for her knees soon. The memories Aghazarian has are not just an experience, but more like lessons. “Water polo made me realize that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.”
