(September 30, 2003) — Clark’s intramural co-ed softball single elimination tournament begins sometime next week. This year’s games started Sept. 23 and 10 games have been played so far. Similar to recent years, all teams will get to play at least one practice game and one more game in the elimination tournament. Yesterday, the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Expos with a final score of 4-3. The Brooklyn Dodgers, with four players from the champion team of the 2002 Clark World Series, defeated the Expos 4-3. Both senior Mazin Elhadary from the Expos and senior Peniel Kim from the Brooklyn Dodgers hit the ball over the fence, which resulted in automatic three outs and slowed the game. On the other side of the field, the Astros beat the Mets 13-8. In the game between the Red Sox and the Giants last Thursday, one batter from the Giants hit the ball, which rolled under the fence and was lost, and automatically ended the game. On the same day, the Cubs, which consists of all seniors, easily beat the Brewers, a team made up of all sophomores, 15-1. The Reds, like last year, showed up for their game with every player of the team wearing red shirts. The Reds beat the Angels 6-5. Tournament coordinator and PE teacher Judy Thomsen told students at the captains’ meeting Sept. 22 that following rules and regulations are a very important part of playing the game since small mistakes of one member of a team can eliminate the whole team from the tournament. For example, because one Red Sox player lost a tutorial pass, the team will not be eligible to play in upcoming games unless they find the pass. Other violations are minor ones, such as throwing bats and speaking in languages other than English. Thomsen said, “[The players] are really competitive and are having a good time. However, they do not really follow the rules, so I have to constantly remind them.” One hundred and ninety-three students are participating in the tournament this year. Twenty teams are involved, two fewer than last year.
