(September 30, 2003) — The term ‘Renaissance Man’ describes someone who is an expert in multiple fields or a simply well-rounded person. Universities all over the United States search far and wide for these rare prodigies. Junior Bansuk (also known as Peter) Lee is slowly and steadily redefining the term ‘Renaissance Man’ through both his play on the basketball court and his activities off the court. “I [can] play many instruments as well: drums, bass guitar, guitar and basically any brass instrument. I’m part of the Salvation Army Southern California Youth Band and we went to Switzerland to tour there last year,” Lee explains, visibly uncomfortable about sharing his talents. It is quite an accomplishment balancing those seemingly strenuous activities and being the starting point guard for Crescenta Valley High School’s Junior Varsity team. At the early age of eight, Lee experimented with soccer, hockey and baseball just a few years prior to focusing on basketball as his sport of choice. According to Lee, basketball isn’t just a sport. It is more than that. Basketball is a safe haven and a therapist for him to release emotions and leave it all out on the court, instead of leaving it within him. “It just clears my mind of everything and I become focused on getting better,” he says. With so many basketball players focusing all their energy towards the sport in hopes of one day getting into the NBA, chances of getting into the league are often slim to none. But this ‘Renaissance Man’ has nothing to worry about if basketball becomes an unfaithful mistress. With the same confidence he embodies on the hardwood, Lee exclaims, “I have many other things to fall back on.”
