(September 30, 2003) — The Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) changed the name of the “Guidance” class to “College Career Preparation” this year. The name change took place because the new name is more specific to what the class teaches, according to Health and College Career Preparation teacher Judy Sanzo. The major difference between the classes, according to Sanzo, is that College Career Preparation has a greater emphasis on the eguidance.com website and focuses more on an online portfolio. Eguidance.com was introduced to Guidance classes last year and informs students about job opportunities and college preparation and planning information. “It’s a good name because Guidance is such a broad term and [College Career Preparation] is more specific to the area we are teaching,” Sanzo said. Last year, according to Health and College Career Preparation teacher Randal Tiffany, the GUSD considered dropping Guidance class and replacing it with a social science class, due to Crescenta Valley High School raising the issue of guidance being unnecessary. However, the District gave each individual school the option of either keeping the class or replacing it with a social science course. Tiffany said that taking out the College Career Preparation class was never an option for Clark because it was an important part of the ninth grade curriculum and since the option of keeping it was given to the school, Principal Doug Dall made the decision to keep the College Career Preparation class. Other GUSD schools also made several changes to the Guidance class. Crescenta Valley High School started a pilot program that blends community service, interviewing and oral presentation into a world-affairs class. Glendale High School has a new community-service program that students can take in place of guidance. Hoover High School also offers a similar community-service program and plans to offer Guidance as an elective.
