(September 30, 2003) — Last year, 107 of Clark’s 228 graduating seniors planned to go to Glendale Community College, while other students attended classes at GCC while still in high school. It’s these students who will most definitely feel the effects of GCC’s $5 million budget cut. According to the News-Press , lack of funding has caused many of GCC’s student services to be scaled back. For example, the GCC library, computer lab, and tutoring center are open fewer hours. In the library, only one librarian will be available for help at a time and there will be fewer books and databases for students to use. The Glendale Community College website indicated that 100 fewer classes were offered this year, which constitute about one third of the total class offerings. To GCC students, this will probably be the most noticeable affect of the cuts. With the reduction in class offerings, enrollment is down by about a third as well. The class cutbacks cause classes to fill up extremely quickly, depriving many students of the opportunity to attend classes they need. GCC student Ibrahim Lala said, “It seems like it’s impossible to get into any classes any more, they fill up so fast.” Counselor Linda Doll said she doesn’t know how many Clark students are attending GCC this year while still in enrolled at Clark, but she said that the number of students was much lower than usual because students can’t get into classes due to overcrowding. The situation is likely to get worse still, as, according to the GCC website, the already meager class offerings will be downsized by a further 20 classes in the fall of 2004.
