(September 30, 2003) — The internationally acclaimed documentary Bowling for Columbine was released Aug. 19 on DVD. It includes four hours of special features, which flow well with the overall theme presented in the documentary. Moore’s controversial ideas, though shocking for many, bring up very important issues that should be addressed – mainly the importance of gun control in our society. Bowling for Columbine gained a lot of attention after Moore publicly attacked President Bush’s decision to go to war with Iraq, during the Oscars. Although, the Academy did not allow him to show the actual footage, he devoted a good half hour segment of the DVD talking about that motivated him to do such a thing – as well as the speech itself. Moore uses informative details to back up many of the statements that he makes, but viewers whose opinions differ from his might still be offended by many of his anti-Bush comments. This is followed by, what can easily be called, the most moving part of the special features. It is a speech that Moore gave at Denver University in Littleton, Denver six months after the incident at Columbine. He addresses many crucial issues that our country faces today, gives his personal political views and thanks the audience for all the support and appreciation they showed for his film. His speech includes many important facts, but many might not appreciate the fact that he presents everything very one-sidedly. Other segments of the DVD include bits and pieces of the many events that Moore participated in throughout the world, a list of all the awards that “Bowling for Columbine” received, as well as a photo gallery of everyone that took part in the making of the film. A particularly interesting add-on is two DVD-ROM extras that give high school and collage teacher’s questions and topics to discuss if they choose to show the documentary to the class.
