(October 27, 2003) — Recently, Principal Doug Dall used money from the Regional Occupation Program to purchase new Apple PowerMac G4s. A total of fifteen PowerMacs have been running smoothly in room 6301 for about two weeks now. Students will utilize the new technology to edit video and audio using industry standard software. Multimedia teacher Russ Nichols said that Dall “has the talent to bring [the] latest technology to Clark Magnet High School.” Because of this talent, Nichols explained that students here have an advantage over other high schools because Clark students are exposed to advances in technology before anyone else. These new Apple PowerMacs will replace the Pentium II Compaq computers that could be considered “ancient” in the ever-changing technological scene. The Compaq computers were used to edit short films and commercials using Adobe Premier. Final Cut Pro replaces Premier with its streamlined editing functions and real-time rendering. According to Nichols, Final Cut Pro is used throughout the industry, most notably with Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel. Professionally created full-length movies and commercials are also edited with Final Cut Pro. About 120 students will access these machines and they are also available to students needing editing capabilities for special projects. Along with editing, the machines also run audio mixers and Teleprompters for the broadcast studio. The machines are able to fulfill many needs of the broadcast studio. According to Nichols, the machines are just one of the many improvement going around the multimedia class right now. He added that soon, a broadcast studio will be utilizing the G4s as the core system operators around the sound stage, studio office and control room in the lab.
