(October 27, 2003) — Following a brief video on the Peace Corps helping better the financial situation in Armenia, a guest speaker from the Usanogh organization addressed last Thursday a group of about 30 Armenian Club members concerning her association, what it stands for and upcoming events. The representative, Anahit Karamanukyan, explained the basics of Usanogh: to help get Armenian youths off the streets and more involved in social and educational activities. Karamanukyan’s 25-minute speech mainly focused on an upcoming event created and sponsored by Usanogh, the First Annual College Summit. The summit is a college fair set up to give high school students information on universities. Workshops will focus on how to properly fill out college applications and how to create an intriguing personal statement. Detailed information on admissions, financial aid and loans will also be offered at the event, according to Karamanukyan. After speaking about the fair, Karamanukyan talked about her own difficulties getting into college and how support from parents and peers is a definite plus when applying. “Hearing a successful college student talk about her problems getting into a university like UCLA gave me more confidence that I could do it, too,” sophomore Lilit Keshishyan said. “The universities need you; it’s not you needing the school,” Karamanukyan said at the close of her speech. More information regarding the First Annual College Summit, as well the Usanogh organization, can be found at www.usanogh.com , or by calling (818) 335-5652.
