(January 21, 2004) — The annual Intramural football tournament is coming to a close tomorrow with the Chicago Bears playing against the winner of the Raiders and the Cardinals. Last year’s champions, the 49ers, have been eliminated from the tournament due to lack of attendance to games by a few of the players. “I feel that we could have gone all the way this year again, but it just wasn’t meant to be,” said senior 49er Isaac O. Intramurals coordinator Judy Thomsen broke the news to San Francisco after they had won against the Redskins, 3-1. However, this disappointment for the 49ers opens a door for a new team to come sweep away the championship. Not only are the 49ers eliminated from the football tournament, but seniors Arbi Ismailyan, Allen Amarkarian, Peniel Kim and the remainder of the team is prohibited from participating in the basketball intramural tournament in March. Despite changes and upsets within the tournament, the referees remain the same: P.E. teachers Thomsen, Randal Tiffany and Chris Axelgard alongside math teacher Fred Blattner. Blowing their whistles and calling illegal plays they help make the game go more smoothly. No spectators were allowed this year until the playoffs started. Justifying this action, Thomsen said, that last year she had administered close to 60 spectator’s passes and would only receive half of them back. “This football tournament has been pretty easy for us to far. All the teams that we have played have put up quite a fight to try to beat us,” said junior Edwin Minassian.
