(March 26, 2004) — Two teams consisting of ten Clark seniors and juniors participated in the Youth Drug Abuse Prevention Program (YDAPP) basketball tournament Saturday at John Burroughs Junior High School in Los Angeles. Six other teams from the Greater Los Angeles area also participated. Team registration began at 8 a.m. and the tournament ended around 5 p.m.. At the time of registration, YDAPP interns passed out anti-drug brochures. Team Clark placed fourth after the semifinals with Team Lewmar from La Cañada High School placing first. Clark seniors Jennifer Kang and Adrian Kim, who intern for YDAPP, conducted sign-ups for the tournament March 1-17. “The purpose of the basketball tournament was to bring out high schoolers from the Los Angeles area and to get them active,” said Kang. “We used the opportunity to reach out to them about drugs.” YDAPP is one of the subgroups of the Korean Youth Community Center (KYCC) programs. While YDAPP focuses mainly on youth drug abuse prevention, Youth Venture, another subgroup of KYCC, focuses on abstinence and safe sex. YDAPP is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 and is currently supervised by Benjamin Kim who said that the purpose for the high schools interns is to build character and leadership. Both Kang and Kim signed up for the internship in June and have been training since August, as the program is a year-long commitment. Kang is in charge of operations and Kim is the executive officer. YDAPP is also planning on hosting a drug abuse awareness art gallery for which students can submit pieces in April and a dance at a later date. All YDAPP-sponsored programs are free.
