(February 23, 2004) — The grounds of Clark serve as a fashion runway for athletes playing for CV, Glendale and Hoover high schools. While most students wear collared shirts and blend right into the crowd, Clark athletes in their stylish uniforms can be spotted from far away. Among the many styles of sports uniforms, cheerleaders have the most defined. While athletes from sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball and football wear conventional sports clothing like shorts or pants, cheerleaders wear trendy skirts as their uniforms. This year, however, no CV and Glendale cheerleaders are attending Clark, which makes the Hoover cheerleading uniform stand out even more. Like cheerleaders, girls also wear skirts for the tennis teams of all three high schools. Unlike last year’s pleated skirts, this year’s skirts are solid and straight to prevent the wind from blowing them upward. The tops for this year’s uniform are also different from last year’s uniform. This year’s tops are made out of polyester, a fabric that does not absorb too much sweat and dries faster, instead of cotton. Sophomore tennis player Jessica Kang said, “This year’s uniforms are much more comfortable than last year’s. Since the tops are less sweat-absorbent, they are more convenient and sanitary to use.” “Comfortable” and “fast-drying” are perhaps the descriptions of reliable sporting clothing since uniforms for various other sports such as football, basketball and soccer are made of polyester. Football uniforms, meant to protect football players from harsh and changing weather, have had the same appearance for the past few years. To keep athletes comfortable on the field, football uniforms are made of a combination of polyester and acrylic fabrics. Football tops are also made to just the right looseness in order for protective gear to be placed easily beneath them. Football players also have the option of buying a letterman jacket, which costs about $300. The jacket, though heavy, can keep players extremely warm in freezing weather, and provides them with a memory of their high school sports days.
