(March 26, 2004) — The Glendale Unified School District is no longer considering charging a $2-per-day bus fee on students who rely on bus transportation to and from Clark. The district will find other solutions to the budget crisis. According to GUSD Chief Business and Financial Officer Steve Hodgson, the Board of Education at its meeting March 17, continued its discussion on the possibility of charging a fee for students transported to and from Clark. It was the general consensus of the Board that no fee be charged to students during the next school year. Hodgson said that the Board will review its position again next spring. A $2-per-day fee would have generated approximately $250,000 to help reduce costs. Furthermore, there will not be a three-week winter break in the 2004-05 school year. English teacher and Glendale Teachers Association (GTA) High School Director Stephanie Sajjadieh said that the district proposed a calendar with a three-week winter break, which 75% of the traditional school teachers in the district ratified. President of the GTA Sandra Fink said that because of concerned parents, the school board did not support the idea and will not vote on that calendar. Teachers are currently being surveyed with the two options to either start Aug. 30 and end June 17 or start Sept. 7 and end June 24, both of which include a Jan. 6 holiday. “Hopefully, by the end of the week, we’ll have a calendar for the next school year,” Sajjadieh said.
