(March 26, 2004) — After countless jump-shots, lay-ups and floor burns, the sixth annual Clark March Madness basketball tournament concluded on Wednesday as Arizona lost against Texas 6-11, in the Division One final. Two styles clashed as the outside shooting of Texas faced the inside presence of Arizona. Junior Garnik Papazian of Arizonia said, “We were confident about our game. I thought if we stopped [senior] Aram [Sarkisyan], then we would be good.” Tuesday, in the Division Two final, Oklahoma came out on top against Texas. Oklahoma took an 11-10 win in overtime on a post-up move by sophomore Sevak Beglaryan. In the girls’ final Monday, USC prevailed against Duke 4-2 in the final seconds with a three-point shot by sophomore Miriam Hernandez. Sophomore Celine Mackerdichian of Duke remarked, “It was a great game. We’re happy we didn’t get slaughtered.” Trophies and plaques were given out after the games concluded to the division champions and the runners-up. Sportsmanship awards were also given out to other competitors in front of the spectators who had come to watch the games. The tournament has been held since 1999 but this year brought about a new addition to the tournament––divisions. The three divisions were a girls’ division, a freshman/sophomore Division One and a junior/senior Division Two. Since team members are usually all from one grade, the divisions work to give everyone a chance to compete, tournament coordinator Judy Thomsen said. “It makes for more competition, it’s more enjoyable and it lets you have better rivalries,” Thomsen added. With separate divisions, a freshman team would now have a chance against other freshmen and sophomores, as opposed to being dominated by seniors. Within the divisions, 57 teams signed up. The playoff began March 9. With spectators now, two teams played half-court games. The extra room made for higher scores and interesting games as four overtimes took place in three rounds.
