(May 4, 2004) — The three-point shooting contest finals will be held this week. The junior/senior division finals take place today, tomorrow for sophomores and Friday for freshmen. Four seniors, four juniors, seven sophomores and eight freshmen made it to the final rounds. In the freshman division, Artin Laleian heads off the finals with a high-score of 36, preceded by Ara Nazarian with 31. Going into the junior /senior division finals with a high score of 19 are juniors Chris Avedissian and Eric Voskanian. There was only one girl participating this year, sophomore Danica Valencia. “It’s a lot of fun and lots of people support me, considering I’m the only girl,” said Valencia. This year’s tournament began with the sophomore division on April 13 during enrichment, followed by freshmen April 14 and the junior/senior/sports team division April 15. The court is divided into five sections, and each player has 60 seconds to make 15 shots with three balls per position. Shots must be made behind the three-point line and violation of this rule amounts to no points for the shot. Each shot is worth one point with the exception of the last ball in each position, which is worth two. The crowd met successful shots with “ooh’s” and misses with “aww’s,” while P.E. teacher Randy Tiffany would comment on misses or close shots saying, “Airball” or “Nice try.” P.E. teacher Randy Tiffany would then alleviate each player’s anticipation by informing the student if he or she qualified to the next round, with the exception of semifinals when the scores still had to be processed. Just two years ago Clark held the annual International Tournament, but due to district consolidation of all ethnicities, it was replaced the following year with the Three-point shooting contest. The number of participants more than doubled from last year with an astounding 120 participants: 28 freshmen, 46 sophomores and 46 juniors, seniors, and sports teams participated.
