(June 4, 2004) — WAKO, a restaurant in Korea Town, is famous among Koreans for its delicious cutlets; however, it is uncommon to see people of other races enjoying these fine tastes, and unfortunately, they are missing out on a good place to dine. Many people have tried chicken teriyaki, orange chicken and Korean BBQ, but what about pork cutlet? It’s a food that most Korean and Japanese restaurants serve, but most people do not try it often, for it is not as well known as the other common delicacies. Compared to many other cutlet places I’ve been to, this is the best one––part of the reason being that they only serve cutlets. Not only do they have meat that is soft and easy to swallow, but also the crunchy outer layer adds more delight and flavor to the food. Above all, the sauce made from the owner’s original recipe creates a perfect combination with the cutlet. One can experience many different cutlets here: pork, orosi, chicken, beef, shrimp, fish, hamburger and cheese. They also serve pork cutlet sandwiches and two types of Japanese noodles: u-dong and zaru soba. All cutlets are served with sauce, miso soup, a bowl of rice, a salad with original dressing, jalapeño and kimchi. Prices range from $7.95 to $12.95 depending on the kind of cutlet. In my opinion, the best deal is the u-dong combo, which comes with a choice of cutlet and other side dishes, except miso soup and rice. The combo is $10.95, a pretty good deal. The owner, Jae-Young Park, learned to make cutlets in Japan and later opened a store here. WAKO is located at 3377 Wilshire Blvd., #112. Hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
