(June 4, 2004) — On May 26 Clark Magnet High School’s Armenian Club held a celebration in the auditoria in commemoration of Armenian’s independence from Turkey. The event was open to all students free-of-charge. The club provided everyone with food and drinks ranging from snacks of popcorn and pretzels to an Armenian food known as lahmajoon – or as many called it – Armenian pizza. As the over one hundred students who showed up ate and drank, senior Sona Gevorkyan entertained everyone by dancing on stage wearing a traditional Armenian dance costume. Gevorkyan then went on to teach many of her fellow students, as well as several staff members such as Spanish teacher Julianne Melville and counseling clerk Becky Bondy, the dance steps. Those who chose to remain sitting encouraged the dancers by clapping and singing along.
