(May 8, 2009) The first time I found out about “From LA With Love” was a few years ago when I was an avid MySpace user always looking to find great new music. Much like finding a good vintage shop or an incredibly hidden corner café, I was hesitant to discuss my new discovery because I felt I didn’t want to share my good fortune of finding an amazing group of LA musicians and having my discovery in a sense, “stolen,” from me. From LA With Love is an underground group of young talented Los Angeles natives who compile different sounds of various genres of music electronically to produce a sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before. The sound is much like that of other underground music, but completely different. The group is composed of various musicians, artists, and my personal inspiration, photographer Theo Jemison. It’s rare to find someone who can name his or her absolute favorite song of all time. For me, it’s easy—“1000 fold” by Computer Jay, a song found on From LA With Love’s 2007 album, ArtDontSleep. The entire album is in a sense, timeless. The compilation of artists on the album include my personal favorite, The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus and Exile, the producer of one of my favorite albums, “Below the Heavens,” by Blu. These artists may be unknown to most, but they are definitely worth looking into for anyone who can enjoy new, funky sounds. The greatest part about this group, however, is how humble they are. They do it, much like the rest of the underground world of musicians, for the love of what they do and not the fame or fortune they will get out of it. Regardless of how long ago their “newest” album was released, or how unknown the group of artists is, I take the risk of spreading the word and having my secret love exposed, with the hope that at least one reader will take it upon themselves to become a fan much like myself and get more music like this running through the eardrums of the youth of Los Angeles.
