(October 29, 2004) — Many Clark students trudge off the buses and head home, only to set their weary gazes on their couches. They grab the remote, plop down in front of the T.V., and are instantly warped into T.V. land. For others who are simply too busy with homework or other activities, exercise is the furthest thing on their minds. Although they are aware of the importance of exercise, many, like sophomore Adena Toonian, either can’t muster up enough effort or just do not have enough time in the day to fit exercising in their daily schedule. “I get home, rest for a while, and then get started on my homework. There is no time for me to exercise,” she said. After the two years of required P.E. in high school, many juniors and seniors do not continue to exercise on a daily basis. “Since I wasn’t forced to do P.E. anymore after sophomore year, I lost motivation in exercising and stopped taking the initiative of continuing it,” said senior Roseanne Magat. The lack of exercise contributes to the health problems of most high school students. According to CBSNews.com, exercise helps relieve stress, helps one sleep better at night and boosts concentration, self-esteem and mood levels. Not only does exercise relieve tension, it improves muscle tone, flexibility and strength. It helps control appetite and sustain a steady weight. According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), it is important to get at least 20 minutes of exercise a day in order to remain healthy and fit. However, there are those who exercise whenever they are given the chance. Many get their exercise from participating in different sports. Senior Tigran Tatulian has been attending martial arts classes for the past three years and goes to practice three times a week. “Exercise relieves stress, helps your flexibility and builds confidence if you train with good intentions,” he said. For sophomore Ani Ayvazyan, gymnastics has been her form of exercise for the past 12 years. “I exercise to stay in shape and to remain healthy,” she said. She is at the Glendale YMCA almost every day for three hours coaching gymnastics to little children. On top of coaching, she practices on her own for over three hours throughout the week.
