(January 25, 2005) — Perhaps some may remember the troves of school visitors taking pictures of the campus not too long ago. You may also remember them by the snacks table, which a few took the liberty of raiding. The guests were teachers, part of the “My So Called Digital Life” project, who visited the campus to participate in a workshop concerning the project and the ideas behind it. As part of the project, students are to take part in researching the differences between student life today and that of one hundred years ago; naturally technology is a major element of the study. Began by the Covina Valley Unified School District and the California State University, Pomona have invited 30 middle and high schools from around the state to participate. Judith Craemer spearheaded the opportunity to involve her 6 th Period advanced art class in the project in hopes of exposing the students to fresh concepts and experiences. Starting Jan. 18 students par take in taking digital images of their life as it revolves around school; 10 pictures will be selected form each class to be published in a collective photo album and multi media show. Each class will also contain a research group, whose responsibilities include writing a total of six reflective writing submissions on the topics provided by the creators. Student will also have access to First Class, a digital community which links the participants for peer feedback. Although student response to the work isn’t all too enthusiastic, some, such as sophomore Johiana Crisostomo seize the “publishing opportunity” which the project provides. Junior Dro Amerian finds the project enlightening, “though I don’t like the blogging.” Blogs, an online posting method, are a mandatory source of peer feedback. The provided software has been glitching. Regardless of the bugs, the students are getting thw work done.
