(January 25, 2005) — “I’d like to announce my return to the game of football,” said junior Anthony Abraham. Having “retired” after the Division I Patriots won their game before their playoffs, Abraham returned to the Patriot lineup Jan. 20 versus the Colts. “I wanted to go out on top. I had a touchdown catch and we won the one game we played before the playoffs. Well, that and I kinda agreed to sub in the rest of the games if I could play the first,” said Abraham. Abraham had to forego his permanent hiatus due to the Patriots’ inability to fill their six roster positions. Because of rain, Abraham returned to play nearly two weeks after the date he was originally scheduled to sub. Games were canceled and pushed back due to rain in early January. With all the rain, a schedule of set dates was abandoned for a per-game schedule. For example, if game two was rained out, that game and all subsequent games would be pushed to a later date. Even though the rain subsided in the middle of the first week of January, Tournament Coordinator Judy Thomsen elected to still postpone the games because of the unplayable condition of the field. When games finally resumed, Abraham wasn’t expecting to play, but came in to contribute another touchdown reception. And being down 4-1 against the Patriots, the Colts resorted to interesting measures, hiding their flags in their pockets. Referee Randy Tiffany noticed this and immediately put an end to the advantage. Later when Junior Artem Khashakyan complained he was missing a flag, Tiffany remarked, “Maybe it’s in your pocket.” The Bears are still the top ranked team in Division I and are favored to win. Division II is wide open, while the Raiders and Patriots are vying for top honors in the girls’ division.
