(March 2, 2005) — Did you know that abdominal exercises do not burn body fat? Well, this is one of the several facts that freshman Anne Gielyn Asi and her partners are researching for their upcoming physical education project. Freshman PE teacher Chris Axelgard assigned each group a topic to research during the week of Feb. 21. Topics range from carbohydrates and fats to body building and swimming. The project requires the students to research online and study the assigned topics, then present the information to the class. According to Axelgard, the students have to present an oral report, turn in a typed report and make use of visual aids in their assignment. Some students reportedly are using PowerPoint and posters as visual aids. They are not given class time to work on the project, but rather have the responsibility to work as a group and plan ahead. Presentations will be made the week of March 21 and conclude on March 28 in the amphitheater. The students are required to dress in a professional manner, which, according to Axelgard, resembles real life experiences such as applying for a job. As each group presents, the class must jot down some notes for a quiz that will be later given to them. “I’m excited to present in front of the class and share interesting facts with them. It’s going to be a great experience to work in a group and I’m looking forward to it,” said Asi. On the other hand, some students are apprehensive. “The project seems pretty hard, but we have our health books, so that will help us a lot,” said freshman Henrik Manukian. Axelgard started the project last year; he said his objective was to add new elements in the class with the use of computers, writing and research. “This is a mini senior project. Everything that the students do for the report will be done for the senior project,” Axelgard said.
