(May 11, 2005) — “Couldn’t they have given this award last year? It doesn’t really help our college applications now,” said senior Andrew Abraham, as he was notified about Clark’s latest achievements. It’s official. California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced on April 19 that Clark is one of the 192 middle schools and high schools to be chosen as a 2005 California Distinguished School. Clark is also one of the 12 high schools in the state of California to have been selected to receive a 2005 Exemplary Career Technical Education Program Award. The Exemplary Career Technical Education Program Award is given to schools that offer students rigorous technological programs. Last April 5, a six-member committee from the California Department of Education visited Clark to assess Clark’s overall performance. After the panel’s visitation and debriefing, librarian Susan Newcomer said that Clark had the award in the bag and that only an official statement was needed. According to Principal Doug Dall, it didn’t come as a surprise to him that Clark received these awards. He said that it was obvious Clark was doing an exemplary job and that the state would have recognized Clark with an exemplary award sooner or later. Though some seniors may be disappointed their college applications wouldn’t be as prestigious as following classes, US Government teacher Nick Doom said that the senior class should be applauded for assisting Clark in getting this award. These awards will be presented on May 20 during an awards ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel. According to Dall the list of guests still hasn’t been finalized, but it would be consisted of district staff members as well as administration from Clark.
