(June 13, 2005) — “Airball!” Health and P.E. teacher Randy Tiffany’s voice could be heard echoing off the gym walls loud and clear over the speaker as he encouraged spectators to chant along with him each time a participant missed the rim. After much delay, including the one week interval due to the state standardized testing, the third annual three-point contest finally came to an end. Freshmen and Sophomore Division finals were May 23, Sport Team and Girls Divisions were May 24, and the Junior and Senior Division finals were May 25. Over 70 eager students gathered to see the best of the best during the finals as the original 100 participants were narrowed down to six shooters. For some, the intense atmosphere of the gym was a little nerve-wracking. “I have to admit I was tense in the beginning. I didn’t make as many shots as I wanted to, but I’m still glad I placed third,” said sophomore Amir Tabrizi, who scored 18 overall points in the Sophomore Division. Others, like sophomore winner Ara Nazarian, who had experience from last year’s contest, found the crowd less intimidating. “I actually felt little pressure as defending champion. Hopefully, I’ll be able to uphold my title for the next two years,” he said. The girls especially took interest in the three-point contest this year. The contest provided the perfect outlet for them to show off their skills. “We came out to have fun. I’m proud of all my girls,” said junior Miriam Hernandez. Sophomore Cheryl Cawit placed first in the Girls Division with a total six shots in the final round. As for the Sports Division, sophomore Aileen Vartanian from Hoover High School was the only girl who entered. She placed with the boys due to lack of female participants. Not only did she compete against the boys, but she also placed second after sophomore Armen Rostami from Glendale High School with ten shots in the final round. “I saw it as a way to prove to myself that I can do it, and for the most part I did just that,” Vartanian said. Senior Emin Khachatoorian rounded up the Senior Division in first place with a score of twelve points in the final round. Junior Shaunt Zakarian won in his division with a score of nine, and freshman Serge Akopyan placed first with twelve shots in the final round. “A lot of great shooters came out for the competition and only six of them could have won. We all had a great time, and I can’t wait for next year’s contest,” said sophomore Armen Rostami. Awards were given out to the top four winners in each of the six divisions at lunch May 27 in the amphitheater. The 3-point contest indicates the end of Intramurals for the rest of the school year, and now participants can choose to use enrichment time to study for upcoming finals.
