(September 29, 2005) — Thunderstorms invaded the skies and softball intramurals had to be postponed to the following day as Sept. 21 marked the first day of the race towards the title of 2005 World Series Champions. There are 230 participants this year who have been evenly split among 23 teams, with 10 members on each team. Most of the members from last year’s champions, The Dodgers, have graduated, and the slot is now open for a team to claim the title. “Hopefully the team I joined this year will also win,” said senior Danica Valencia, a member from last year’s Dodgers. For some who are playing for the first time, winning does not seem to be the most important thing on the plate. “I joined because softball is one of my favorite games at school, and I could play with my friends rather than with assigned teams, like in P.E.,” said junior Nick Lee from the White Sox. Others who have been playing for the past three years have higher expectations of themselves. “Losing the championship game last year was painful and disappointing, but we practiced during the summer and we hope to win this time,” said senior Kyung Cho, a member of the Phillies. The Phillies were placed second in last year’s championship. No matter who wins or loses, one thing that all players can relate to is being on a team. “A good team needs teamwork. This includes camaraderie and support,” Lee said. Lee also said that teamwork produces fun. “It all boils down to having fun. Winning is an added bonus,” Lee said. Each team will get the chance to play in at least two games before the single elimination process begins. Provided there is no bad weather in the following weeks, the single elimination bracket tournament will commence during the second week of October. “We watch all the games and seed the good teams so it makes it more exciting at the end,” said P.E. teacher Judy Thomsen. Thomsen says that from the “seeding process,” teams will “cancel” each other out. The competition of the two remaining teams will then decide the champions of the 2005 school year.
