(December 16, 2005) — Every day at 3 p.m. the bell rings, signaling the beinning of everyone’s favorite daily stampede to the numerous yellow buses lined up in fron ot fht school. Although this is the case for most Clark students, a select few choose to walk to drive home. Other stand around and wait for someone to come to their rescue, preferably with a functioning automobile tucked under their arm, until late into the afternoon. There is, however, one more group of students who leave school in a different way. Though perhaps unbeknownst to its average attendee, Clark has its very own handful of student cyclists who hop onto their bikes every day and pedal their way home. Among these is sophomore Raffi Diradourian, who has been biking home since the middle of his freshman year. Every afternoon, he walks down to the driveway, and instead of heading towards the buses like the rest of the crowd, he veers to the left and releases his bike from the rack it is locked onto all day. With a helmet on his head, he heads out past the sea of students towards home, conveniently located about fifteen minutes away. “It is too far to walk, and the gas prices are too high. This way I can save my parents’ gas money,” Diradourian said. He said he also enjoys the actual riding, for it gives him “time to think,” and exercise. Another interesting aspect of Diradourian’s mode of transportation is the experiences one inevitably goes though while riding home. “Sometimes on Foothill people almost hit me because they do not look where they are going,” he said. “So I hit the brakes and let the cars go by.” Luckily, however, he hasn’t gotten hit yet. Despite this risk, those who choose to bike like Diradourian do themselves several favors like staying healthgy and saving money. As Diradourian said, “It’s a win-win situation.”
