(January 27, 2006) — A look at last year’s hiking club will take you to a scene of 16 happy hikers in the midst of nature. This year’s hiking club, however, has fewer members from the students of Clark who are not showing the hiking club the same support as it received in the past. ASB advisor Kristina Provost advises the hiking club. Provost chose to advise the club because she enjoys hiking in her spare time. Though she didn’t start the club, she enjoys advising it due to her passion for hiking, she said. Teacher Dianna Jaynes started the hiking club in 2003. Last year, Jaynes took the club’s 16 members on a few hikes. They visited Arroyos Echo, Whitting Woods and Griffith Park. Jaynes said she started the club with a “small group of dedicated students.” “ [I wanted to] share with my students my love of hiking,” she said. Although the club began with only 10 members, they managed to go on four hikes. This year’s club, on the other hand, has gone on two hikes, both to Eaton Canyon. During meetings, they have a turnout of about 10-12 people. The first hike to the canyon yielded 10 members. The second hike was not as successful as only one member came. The hiking club’s most active member is freshman Christine Hooper. “It’s beautiful,” she says, referring to the scenery on the hikes. Hooper even enjoys challenges of the club. “It’s a challenge, but I love to prove boys wrong and show them that I can hike and keep up with them.” This is understandable as Hooper is one of the only female members who actually partake on the scheduled club hikes. “We need more girls! We need more people! I just wish more people were interested. We need members who go to meetings and hikes, not just meetings for their friends,” she said. Hooper said that the hiking club needs more support from Clark students who love to be active and love to have fun. There is no doubt that the club needs student support to become what it once was and what it continued to be until this year. The club is planning another hike for the month of February. If interested, talk to a club member or to Provost for more information.
