(January 27, 2006) — Chargers took the title of champions of the Division I Super Bowl with a win of 5-1 against the Raiders on Tuesday. In the beginning of the game, the Raiders were on the route to win. “ I think the Raiders will win the game, they’re organized and have a great defense,” said sophomore Mindy Robins who watched from the sideline before the game began. Soon, however, the Chargers stepped up and took control of the field, dominating the rest of the game. The Super Bowl games started in fall of 1998. According to Intramurals Coordinator Judith Thomsen, 210 students and thirty teams joined the Super Bowl this year. “This year it’s more teams, more games and definitely more competitive,” said teacher Randal Tiffany, a referee for the 2005-2006 Super Bowl. This year’s Super Bowl games were full of excitement and surprises. Junior John Cismas of the Division I Falcons knew this best. After a loss of 7 to 1 to the Bengals on Jan. 13, Cismas spent most of the Super Bowl season on the sideline watching the games. “We tried our best but when we got on the field, we just choked.” The Division II semifinal game between Vikings and Chargers also got a lot of attention. “It was two great teams playing a great game,” said sophomore Luke Arathoon of the division II Raiders. A large crowd was kept in suspense on Jan. 18 when the game was stopped at the end of enrichment and was continued on a second day. In the end, the Vikings won 4-3 and made it to the finals to face the Raiders. “It was obvious from the beginning that the Raiders and Vikings would make it to the finals. They are two of the best teams,” said sophomore Sevada Panosian of the Panthers. On Jan. 20, the Vikings and Raiders rushed to the field proudly and confidently as the game went on; the outcome of the game seemed obvious. “It was actually a boring game. One team kept scoring all the touchdowns,” said sophomore Shahan Boghigian who was a substitute player for the Vikings. The game ended with a final and easy touchdown by sophomore Anthony Ghazanian while sophomore Artin Mardirousi of the Vikings waved around a red Raiders flag celebrating their win. Both teams, however were still good friends. “On my list, Raiders are still number one,” Mardirousi said. The Raiders were the most favored to win the girl’s division championships. “The Raiders are so good that everyone wanted to beat them and that brought out the best in the teams,” said junior Heidi Chang of the Patriots. As expected, the Raiders made it to the finals against the Patriots. “It was an exciting game and I enjoyed being in it,” said Chang. “Hopefully we’ll get first place next year.”
