(March 1, 2006) — Upon walking in, you might find yourself in the epitome of a Southern home style kitchen, greeted by framed country proverbial expressions such as “The rooster crows, but the hen lays the eggs,” farmhouse wallpaper and tablecloth, and the smell of gravy and fried chicken. No doubt about it, it’s “country.” However, this taste of country is Dinah’s Chicken, set right in the city of Glendale on the corner of Los Feliz and San Fernando, and is a true gem if what you “dig” is straight up fried chicken. The story of Dinah’s first began in 1967 under the guidance of Harry and May Pearson, in a desire to share their family’s country chicken recipe with Los Angeles. They had privately owned and operated the Dinah’s restaurants in Culver City and Glendale for 21 years before passing down ownership to their son and his wife, Dave and Linda Pearson. Nothing much has changed, except for the times, and their original chicken recipe still carries the Dinah’s legacy. Dinah’s is “busiest on weekends, as well as during the work week, especially during lunch and dining hours,”says cashier/waitress Yesenia Rodriguez. The most popular meal is unsurprisingly, “the chicken, accompanied by a side of pineapple coleslaw, potato salad, or their classic mashed potatoes and gravy. And my favorite meal would have to be the chicken dinner with the potato salad,” says Rodriguez. Although the chicken is their star feature, their fish and shrimp meals should not be overlooked as they are as delectable as well. After lunch or dinner, it would also be wise to check out the desserts. “Some of the popular ones are the peach, vanilla, apple, and banana crumb pastries,” said Rodriguez. Dinah’s is very well one of the best choices for country grubbin, and couldn’t be better complemented than by the ambience of the establishment. With a taste only rivaled by other soul food setups such as Golden Bird and Roscoe’s, it is definitely worth stopping in one day for a bite. Dinah’s is located at: 4106 San Fernando Road Glendale, CA 91204
