(April 5, 2006) — Junior Nick Khalizadeh anxiously looks over the Sudoku puzzle on his desk as he waits for the buzz of the enrichment bell. Once it rings, he will fi nally be able to release all his energy on the gymnasium fl oor during his intramural basketball game as part of the Illinois team. “It’s a great way to spend enrichment and to enjoy a competitive game with friends,” Khalizadeh said. Khalizadeh has been playing basketball for over seven and a half years. Although he does not have his own basket at home, he fi nds time to practice at Brand Park once every three weeks and twice a week with his own league, Ararat, a private basketball league he has been a part of since 1999. He then continued to play for Hoover High School’s soph/frosh and JV teams during his freshman and sophomore years. Khalizadeh played shooting guard and small forward for both years and averaged about eight points and three rebounds each game. This year, Khalizadeh had a busy schedule that caused him to quit the Hoover basketball team. “It would be too hard to balance two basketball teams and keep up with all the AP classes during my junior year of high school,” he said. He then began participating in the Clark intramural games. This is the fi rst time that Khalizadeh has played in Clark’s basketball intramural games. He participated in the three-point shootout last year and has also participated in the softball intramurals for the past two years. Although chances for intramural victory for him and his team have withered down to a mere dream for next year’s games, Khalizadeh remains positive. “My team did well overall, and there is always more room for improvement,” he said.
