(November 21, 2006) — Last Saturday two busloads of 83 sleepy Clark seniors began their descent from Clark to Long Beach, where they boarded a boat that would take them on the 5 th annual senior class trip to Catalina Island. The sleepiness soon wore off and gave way to jovial celebrations. The power of song and dance were obviously alive and well all day, keeping spirits high when the icy cold became too much to bear. On the boat trips both to and from Catalina, senior Troy Minassian and friends braved the freezing sea winds to climb to the top of the boat and take part in the hollering of sing-along classics such as “The Numa Numa Song” and “I Want It That Way.” “I was so hyped up that I ran up to the top level of the boat so I could feel the wind in my face,” Minassian said. I started saying hello to people around me. When there wasn’t anyone, I tried to say hello to the people on the levels below me. I had to scream so they would hear me. But after about ten minutes the security guy made me stop.” The students were all to rendezvous at Steve’s Steakhouse for lunch at 11:30, where the menu consisted of fish and chips, cheeseburger or a chicken patty. “The food was really really good. I got the chicken patty. But we didn’t get any freakin’ doughnuts!” said Ani Aivazian. After lunch, seniors were given the rest of the day to do as they pleased. Included in each student’s $75-90 package were two vouchers for the following activities: a ride in the glass-bottom boat, a round of mini-golf, a two hour bike rental or a tour of the island. Glass bottom boats toured the ocean bottom, where students could view and feed the many flying fish and bright orange-colored Garibaldi fish. Bike renting was among the most popular of all the activities chosen by students. Srbuhi Pogosyan said, “Oh my god, I had a blast. It was the best time ever. How Hayk [Snkhchyan] was about to fall off the cliff or when Karo [Karapet Gabrielyan} went down the long stairs with his bike or how Luso [LusineKarapetyan] put the cat in a coma during miniature golf. Armine [Poghosyn] falling off the bike every other minute, and how she got lost for like 15 minutes. Wow, we just had the best time.” Seniors also had occasional encounters with Catalina residents, which most found to be very friendly and welcoming. Aivazian said, “We [Ruzanna Abovyan and I] were introduced to this very nice Samoan guy named Jeremy. He and his friends showed us the main points of Catalina. They were very friendly… to the point where they asked us for our numbers.” The festivities were sadly interrupted when Narbeh Karimian fell off his bicycle while swerving to avoid another student, and wounded his arm. He spent the remainder of the day with Principal Doug Dall at the Catalina Hospital. At the time of the incident, Catalina doctors were unsure whether he had fractured, sprained or broken his arm, but now it has been confirmed that [insert]. The merriment didn’t end when seniors boarded the bus that would take them from Long Beach back to Clark. ASB advisor Kristina Provost led in the singing of the Titan theme song, except replaced “Titans” with “Panthers.” Senior Haig Darakjian said he didn’t think it would be as fun as it was. “It was great to spend time with my friends,” he said. “We were just laughing the whole day. The seniors who didn’t go missed out.”
