(March 3, 2009) — When Principal Doug Dall announced the beginning of the Clark Expo on Feb. 21, potential Clark students and their parents moved from the overfilled auditeria and started up the amphitheater stairs. The smell of hot dogs from the Panther Pit lured some into immediately eating while others continued onward to explore Clark. Besides the large crowd of potential students, alumni also made a presence at the expo. Armine Gukasyan, Class of 2004, said she felt “so many emotions running through” her as she walked through the halls of Clark and saw several of her old teachers. “They all remembered me which brought me to tears,” she said. Gukasyan came to Expo to help Arlene Haghverdian with the Truth Movement booth. Now studying at Biola to become a nurse, Gukasyan remembered her old days as a Clark student as she relived her experience. According to Gukasyan, Clark didn’t change much from when she attended high school. “It even smells the same,” she said. Meanwhile, Madeline Sy, a middle school student, got a glimpse of the school she hopes to go to. Sy said she likes Clark because it’s smaller, has a deeper curriculum and “looks better than other schools.” Sy said she was interested in Clark’s art program, including the animation classes. Amidst the club and class displays, art teachers Judith Craemer, Alison Kuehn and Frank Wyatt opened their doors to present student-made projects. Meanwhile, Art Club leader junior Jenny Oh showcased an experiment which analyzed the effectiveness of imitating a drawing placed upside down while working on the major art club project to be presented later in the year. Such hands-on displays were widespread at the expo, from teacher Gerald Gruss’s wave motion illustration to several math students attempting extra credit math problems in teacher Charles De Vore’s classroom. Assistant Principal Kristina Provost believes ASB advisor Susan Giatti’s organization played a big role in the Expo’s success. “Out of all the Expos we’ve done, this was the most efficiently run and effective one,” Provost said.
