(January 26, 2007) — The vibrations of the bass guitar rock all the organs in your body, the blasting noise of the electric guitar shatters your eardrums and the blood curdling screams make your spine shiver. What else could it be but the symphonic black metal music of Nightfall. Formed in late 2006, Nightfall is a band composed of Clark seniors Eric Vartanian (bass guitar), Derick Hovsepian (electric guitar) and Chris Manasserian (keyboard), along with a Hoover High School senior and a Glendale High School graduate. Contrary to popular belief, the loud screams called lyrics, sung by all members of the band, are actual words. While they can only be understood by extremely close listeners or lyric readers, Nightfall lyrics always contain some deep meaning. “We are sick of hearing songs about love, heartbreak and other weak emotions,” Hovsepian said. “We sing about ancestry, culture, faith, courage or the lack thereof. You should always learn something from a song…if you can grasp the dark nature, who knows where you can go?” The band hopes to play shows for fellow students and possibly produce small demo tracks to spread digitally, but there are no plans for a full album production. While they do not want to completely follow the footsteps of inspiration bands such as Emperor, Behemoth, Immortal, Mayhem and Enslaved, Nightfall members definitely want to put out one message: experience something different. “All we really want to do is play a few shows and let people know that there is music out there other than Jay Z,” Hovsepian said. Nightfall does not currently play any shows, but the members have hopes of performing at the Clark Talent Show if permitted. However, the band members are far from inexperienced. Vartanian has been jamming on his guitar for three years now and playing bass for about a year, Hovsepian has been a musician all his life and picked up electric guitar two years ago and Manasserian has been pounding the keyboard for 11 years. Unfortunately, not many Clark students have heard their sound. Nightfall plays several “sessions” for their peers where they basically practice their music and allow friends to watch. Friends of the band members also frequent Nightfall’s weekly practices conducted in Hovsepian’s garage, “also known as the ninth level of Hell,” said Vartanian. Also, unlike other bands of the black metal genre, Nightfall is not big on theatrics. “We’ll occasionally wear some face paint for fun, but for us it’s definitely more about techniques, not showing off with effects,” Vartanian said. The members of the band believe that their future is bright. “We’re better than all of the bands you have ever listened to,” claims a humble Vartanian. “We are invincible and can’t be killed!” While you might not be able to go pick up a Nightfall CD at your local retailer, definitely keep an eye and ear out for this distinctive band in the near future.
