(February 23, 2007) — Imagine you are on stage in the auditeria in front of a crowd full of parents, teachers, students and dr. Michael F. Escalante—the superintendent of GUSD. With a guitar in hand, your goal is to successfully perform a piece you have been practicing for months. This is your only chance and whether this performance turns out good or bad solely depends on you. Feeling nervous yet? This was reality for junior Gayane Vardoyan, one of the student performers of last Thursday’s Founders Day ceremony. “I am just very happy that I got through it,” she said. This year’s Parent Teacher Student Teacher Association (PTSA) Founder’s Day event consisted of three components: a meeting, the awards ceremony and the stunning student performances. PTSA Membership Chairperson Lynnette Hamada first started off with a brief history of the 110 years of the Parent Teacher Association. Then followed the main body of the ceremony: honors awarded to PTSA members and the winners of the PSTA contest in areas such as the visual arts, photography and literature. “I feel elated, surprised and deeply touched,” said Health teacher Judy Sanzo, one of the staff recipients that night. “It was a great blend of varieties such as the poetry, music and the goodies at the end of course,” she added. Many times, students think that PTSA meetings are held just for parents and teachers. But that is certainly not true here at Clark. “I think it is a big misconception. Everyone is invited to attend the meetings,” said ASB advisor Kristina Provost. However, many more clubs and students participated on this day than in previous years. “It’s really cool to see teachers and students hanging out together,” said junior Beny Babu, the student representative of PTSA. “Last year, it was good, but this year [the Founder’s Day] was fantastic.” Just like many other Clark events, the show drew to a close with a lively performance by the Dance Club. “I could tell the other performers were nervous,” said junior Anne Asi, “but we were great.”
