(December 14, 2006) — There’s no doubt that for some seniors, senioritis has kicked in. The symptoms include going home after one class, sleeping in and lazing about. There is a need for a cure; for some seniors, the Super Bowl Intramural competition is exactly what the school nurse would recommend. Senior Bill Varsh, a member of the Division I Eagles, has no problem staying for seventh period after his last class in order to participate in the games during enrichment. “It’s fun,” he said. “I’m patient and I get some work done. It’s no hassle.” With an attitude like this, it’s no wonder Varsh’s team is currently in the lead in Division I; they won their first game 6-1 against the Falcons Nov. 15 and tied 5-5 in their second game against the 49’ers Nov. 29. He and his teammates practice with the P.E. equipment while waiting for the enrichment bell to ring and the fun to start. Since it is his last year, Varsh explains that he has high expectations and believes that his team has “a fair shot at winning.” Some seniors have other activities after school ends for them, but manage to schedule their time around it. “We all have work,” explains senior Kristine Kirakosyan. On days when they don’t have work they leave school and come back in time to play. “We all get something to eat, even though what we eat isn’t healthy. Then we come and play,” Kirakosyan said. She is a team member in an all-senior team—the Vikings—in the girls’ division. The Vikings currently rank second in the girls’ division. On Nov. 21, they won 2-0 against the Patriots for their first game and 4-0 against the Raiders Dec. 5 for their second. While it might seem important to some seniors to quickly get out of school, others don’t mind coming back just to engage in an outdoor activity with their friends. Beginning Nov. 15, teams have been able to practice for at least two games. Elimination games will start Jan. 3 and continue to the championship games Jan. 17 for the girls division, Jan. 18 for Division II and Jan 19 for Division I.
