(January 26, 2007) — If there was a fifth season of a year, it would definitely be the one we are living through now: Awards Show Season. There are the Golden Globes, the Oscars, the People’s Choice Awards, and the list goes on. However, the fuss around these award shows is not necessarily about the ceremonies themselves, but rather on the nominees’ fashion and behavior. Several tangent results appear in the headlines of news sources. For example, there was a recent article on Yahoo! that after the Golden Globes, the ticket sales of nominated and awarded small-scale and foreign films increased noticeably. The film Babel increased 500 percent in ticket sales and was placed 12 in the top 20 box office earners after being awarded for the Best Motion Pictures in Drama at the Golden Globes along with several other nominations. In addition, the film The Queen earned an increase of 233 percent in ticket sales after Helen Mirren won several awards for the film as Queen Elizabeth I and her TV drama series as Queen Elizabeth II. Meanwhile, a Spanish film Pan’s Labyrinth saw an increase of 118 percent in ticket sales and moved from sixteenth to seventh place on the box office charts. The attention on the Golden Globes does not stop there. All over the magazines and news websites are pictures of celebrities posing, smiling and waving with their designer clothes and accessories that would add up to a price of a new car. It is mostly about who wore what, who came with who, the best and worst dressed, the best and worst hairstyles, and the best and worst behaviors. In this case, there was a big talk about how Cameron Diaz was dressed horribly while Angelina Jolie was accused of being rude to a reporter on the red carpet. The hype around the Golden Globes was huge, but the hype around the Oscars may be even bigger. If the nominations already caused a commotion, the aftermath can be chaos. Happy watching!
