(June 14, 2007) — Looking across the amphitheater at lunch, freshman Joseph Baar is seen flipping through the pages of a book. While others may be standing around talking or gathering at the lunch lines, Baar wastes no time and reads. He spends at least two to three hours a day reading. His twin, Jacob Baar, shares his passion for books. Together Jacob and Joseph read and discuss books. From a young age, Baar spent any free moment he had reading. As he grew older, Baar started to read more. He is even considering becoming a writer in the future. His favorite book series is “The Legend of the Guardian King,” which is a Christian fantasy series by Karen Hancock, written in a style similar to J.R.R Tolkein’s, about one man’s quest to search for truth and freedom. In addition to reading at home, Baar also spends his time reading during class, snack, lunch, Enrichment and even when he is waiting after school to be picked up by a parent. He feels that books help a person grow, which is a major reason why he spends most of his time reading. Baar has one negative thing to say about this reading habit: he reads too much. Not only do his teachers think he reads too much, but his parents also feel the same way. “My parents have threatened to ground me from reading,” laughs Baar. Still he is determined to keep reading and get the most out of all that he reads. Although Baar reads most of the time, he does spend another good portion of his time playing video games. Although his main interest is reading, Baar also plays video games as a hobby. “In my opinion, books are more graphic than video games,” Baar said. This does not mean he will stop playing video games since he does spend at least one hour a day playing video games. Baar’s interests do not stop at reading and video games. Unlike many people, Baar also has a passion for mathematics. It is a subject which he succeeds in because he spends a lot of time studying. Baar is looking forward to the future. He is hoping to become either a writer or a professor in mathematics. Baar feels that the knowledge he obtains from reading will help him excel in life and will aid him in gaining the profession that he wants to have.
