(June 14, 2007) — Seniors had so much to look forward to throughout second semester: college acceptance letters, spring break, the senior project, graduation and perhaps a call from the new disciplinary counselor, math teacher Charles DeVore. Students, one after another, are called into his office where he cracks down on seniors with numerous truancies. According to DeVore, many students have marked truancies because they are not aware of the attendance policy. “Students have only three days to clear an absence,” he said. “After three days, the uncleared absences appear illegitimate on the records.” In addition, students are marked absent when they do not leave school grounds properly. “Students need to be aware that the office needs parent contacts and issues permission slips for students to leave campus early,” DeVore said. Only a few students received ATS for ditching. Senior Joseph Seong received ATS two weeks in a row: one for ditching and the other for not reporting to DeVore’s room. “The administration said that I should not give up, especially since I only have two months left of school,” he said. “They gave me a guilt trip.” After facing the consequences, Seong stopped ditching.
