(October 5, 2007) — The phrase “Oh, and one more thing” should be very familiar to anyone who has seen an Apple press conference. CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs has made this into a sort of catch phrase, denoting an important product announcement sure to leave the audience in awe. On Sept. 5, Jobs used his catch phrase, unveiling a highly expected, albeit cool new product that is sure to be on everyone’s Christmas list this year: the iPod Touch. The iPhone introduced a revolutionary new interface appropriately dubbed “multi-touch” which allows the user to interact with a device with more precision, speed and fun than ever before. The iPhone applied this interface to many applications, including a powerful music and video player. However, most people were understandably not ready to adopt a $600 phone just for the luxury of a better iPod. Esentially, the iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone. Aside from the new high-tech interface, the iPod touch also has wi-fi, which allows for Internet access. Apple includes a web browser and Youtube application with every iPod touch, making this the first mp3 player with wi-fi that is truly supported, unlike Microsoft’s offering, the Zune. In addition to these features, the iPod touch can access the iTunes wi-fi store, allowing the user to purchase songs on the go without a computer. A partnership with Starbucks even allows the iPod touch to link with the Starbucks wi-fi network to view songs recently played in the Starbucks and purchase them from the iTunes wi-fi store. These are all great features, but they come at a price. The iPod Touch retails for $299 for 8 GB and $399 for 16 GB. Considering other models are $50-100 less, and can hold up to 160 GB, it’s obvious the new tech is costly and doesn’t allow much room for other components. However, the iPod has become more of a status symbol than a practical device, and people will buy it regardless. The big update to the iPod is great, but the lack of memory and high price may continue to put some customers off until later when the inevitable price drop occurs.
